That Giant Jesus Sign

The giant Jesus sign that lead me himself.

This is the actual Jesus sign that I was led to in the midst of crying out to God, asking if he was even real. Unfortunately, I can’t find the original image so this highly edited version will have to do.

Think about that moment you were brought back to life. If you came to Christ later in life, that moment of regeneration might be crystal clear—the instant when you finally accepted, heard, and became willing to listen to the gospel of Jesus Christ. Maybe you walked through terrible hardship—losing someone you loved deeply, battling addiction, or watching suffering you couldn’t fix. Maybe you looked around at this broken world and thought, Why is this happening? You were at the end of yourself.

Or maybe you came to Christ early on—grew up in the church, and your earliest memories have always been saturated in Jesus. Wherever your story starts, my hope is that you can recall that moment when you were truly brought back to life—when every word spoken about Jesus suddenly became loud and clear.

I remember mine vividly. I’ve told this story many times, but now I want to shout it from the mountaintops. And since this is the closest thing I have to a mountain, here it goes. I was sitting in my car, crying like I had never cried before. I was completely broken. Through tears I whispered, “God, are you even real?” And then I looked up and saw it—a giant Jesus sign. Right there, in that exact moment, I believe Jesus brought me back to life. Without skipping a beat, my heart simply said, Okay.

The very next Sunday, I walked into that church. From the second I stepped through the doors, I felt something different. A different kind of—peace, amazement, and love. Every lyric in worship hit deep. Every word from the pastor landed as truth straight to my soul. And then the gospel was shared—the good news that Jesus Christ, the Son of God, came to save sinners like me. That through His death and resurrection, I could be forgiven, made new, and live in freedom. And right there, I accepted Jesus.

The years before seeing that giant Jesus sign were spent in complete darkness. I can say honestly now that I didn’t want to be alive anymore. The fear and anxiety that consumed me were unbearable, and I was desperate to be free from my own thoughts. All I wanted was to be free from myself. (As time goes on and God does more work in me, maybe someday I'll share why I had so much anxiety and fear.) I was self-medicating with marijuana daily. It started with nightly tokes that progressed to the moment I woke up, all day, everyday. The enemy whispered lies: “You’re better this way. You’re more fun this way. You like yourself better.” But the truth is, I was trapped. No one really knew how much darkness I was living in.

Darkness is the opposite of light. Think about that. Picture a dark room, and then lighting a single candle. Instantly, the room changes. The light pushes out the darkness. That’s exactly what happened when Jesus brought me back to life. My soul went from darkness to light, and every day that I seek Him, that light grows brighter.

“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” — John 1:5

“For the Son of Man came to seek and save the lost.” — Luke 19:10

“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” — Psalm 147:3

“I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” — John 10:10

My call to you—to everyone who knows Jesus—is this: never forget that moment. That moment when your life changed forever. Remember it often and be grateful for it. I never want to go back to that place of fear and despair. Jesus rescued me from it.

Hear me on this: coming to Christ doesn’t mean life will be free of hardship or trials. But the difference is everything. Because now, in the middle of those trials, we have peace, joy, and a deep understanding that only comes from knowing how immeasurable Jesus’s love truly is.

And if you don’t know Him yet—if you’re searching for peace and wondering if He’s real—I promise you, He is. Jesus loves you more than you can possibly imagine. He wants a relationship with you. Real peace only comes from knowing Jesus Christ as your Savior.
